Cervo Canal National Project Update: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Cervo Canal National Project in Balarampur, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (December 11, 2021). UP CM Yogi Adityanath was also present on the occasion. (See pictures below). Work on the project began in 1978 but was delayed due to budget constraints, lack of inter-district coordination and proper oversight, and was completed after nearly five decades. After a long wait of 50 years, PM Modi, at the push of a button, launched the Cerro Canal National Project connecting the nine districts of Bahraich, Gonda, Sharavasti, Balarampur, Siddharth Nagar, Basti, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj and Sant Kabir Nagar. Construction of the project began in 1971-72 and was completed this year.

Cervo Canal National Project Update: Know the merits, who will benefit.

  • Completed at a cost of Rs. 9802 crore, the project will irrigate 1.45 million hectares of land which will benefit 3 million farmers.
  • The main canal is 350 km long. The length of canals flowing out of it is 6600 km. The canal is made up of five rivers Ghaghra, Sree, Rapti, Banganga and Rohini.
  • Along with irrigation, the project will also reduce the distance between the three districts. A paved road will also be constructed on both sides of the Rapti Main Canal. The road track from the canal goes directly from Sharavasti to Siddharth Nagar. I
  • This will reduce the distance between the three districts of Sharavasti, Balarampur and Siddharth Nagar. So far, Siddharth Nagar is 102 km away from Sharavasti. This route will reduce the distance to 30 km.
