Amit Khare has been appointed advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has been appointed as Secretary to the Government of India for a term of two years on a scale of salary. (JH: 1985) as Secretary to the Prime Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, as Secretary to the Government of India. Early life and education

Khare, a 1985 batch IAS officer, was born into a North Indian Kayastha family and graduated from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Hanu (Jharkhand) in 1977 and then graduated with honors from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He has an older brother, Atal Khare, an Indian Foreign Service officer.

Has been a career

In his 36-year career, Khare has held important positions in the Government of India, the Government of Jharkhand and Bihar. He has long served as the Secretary of State for Elementary Education and has also served in the Ministry of Human Resource Development at the Center. He helped introduce the National Education Policy 2020, which was approved by the Cabinet in July 2020. He has also served as Principal Secretary and Collector and DM, Patna to Governor of Jharkhand Veed Marwah. He also served as Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In December 2019, he took over the post of Secretary, Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education) with additional charge of School Education.

Notable contributions

Amit Khare, then an IAS officer of Bihar cadre, was the deputy commissioner of Maghribi Singh Bhoom district in 1996, when he came to know about the notorious scam of Chara scam which involved Rs. 940 crore has been embezzled in Bihar over the years. Because of this, successive Chief Ministers Jagannath Mishra and Lalu Yadav had to go to jail. Other culprits include former Chaibasa DM, IAS officer Sajal Chakraborty.
